JEIL Bearing – Korea's Pioneer in Ball Bearing Units

When Korean industry was still finding its feet in the early 1970s, a small workshop in Gyeonggi Province set out to do something no domestic company had done before: manufacture ball bearing units on Korean soil. More than fifty years later, that workshop has grown into Jeil Bearing Industry Co., Ltd., a globally recognised producer whose JIB-branded bearings now serve customers in more than 30 countries across the Asia, Europe and the USA.

From a Buchwon workshop to a global brand

Jeil Bearing Industry was established in November 1972 and, five years later, consolidated its headquarters and factory in Buchwon (today Bucheon), Gyeonggi Province, where the company still operates. In 1980 JEIL began exporting its UC bearings overseas, a milestone that earned the firm the One-Million-Dollar Export Tower award from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry just five years later, in 1985.

The 1990s were a decade of recognition. In 1991 the company was formally incorporated as Jeil Bearing Ind Co., Ltd. Four years later it collected three parallel awards for outstanding performance – in Automation (Ministry of Commerce & Industry), Business Innovation (KPC) and Productivity Leadership (S&ME) – and passed the five-million-dollar export mark.

Recent years have been dedicated to strengthening the technology base. The in-house Bearing Technology Research Institute was founded in 2011, and in 2015 JEIL developed Korea's first domestically engineered SRB (Spherical Roller Bearings). Construction of an entirely new facility in Gimpo is scheduled to begin in 2026, with completion planned for 2027.

Built on Korean engineering, proven worldwide

JEIL's strength lies in vertical manufacturing control, from raw-material machining through precision grinding, assembly and automated inspection. The company has invested heavily in proprietary measurement technology: in 2005 it patented a clapping drive device for ball-bearing inner-race measuring and, in the same year, developed an automatic inner/outer-diameter gauge that is still used on its production lines today. In 2006 JEIL was awarded the INNO-BIZ certificate for technology innovation by the Korean government and was licensed as a KITECH partnership enterprise, which confirmed that its R&D operates at the top tier of Korean bearing engineering.

Inside the JEIL factory

Most JIB bearings roll off lines that need almost no human hands. Automated grinders work the inner and outer raceways to a mirror-smooth finish under constant sprays of coolant. And because hundreds of litres of water and cutting oil circulate through the plant every shift, JEIL filters the waste stream and recycles both the water and the oil through multiple stages before any of it leaves the factory.

Assembly is largely automated. Machines gauge each bearing, sort the components by diameter to match them into matching pairs, press on the shields, and then run every unit through an acoustic-defect check that listens for the tell-tale whine of a flaw invisible to the eye. Lasers engrave the final JIB marking, and vacuum grippers pick, place and tighten the set screws.

• KS Certificate #4834 – awarded in 1986, confirming compliance with Korean national standards
• ISO 9002 (QSC 60338) – obtained in 1996 and converted to ISO 9001 in 2002
• ISO 14001 (environmental management) and ISO 45001 (occupational health & safety) – obtained in 2025
• INNO-BIZ technology-innovation certificate (2006)

JIB unit ball bearings and housed units are designed for the hard-wearing environments of industrial automation, conveying equipment, agricultural machinery, food-processing lines, textile machinery, HVAC and general-purpose power transmission. From their original stronghold in the Korean domestic market, JEIL bearings are now sold across Asia, Europe and the North America, with over thirty export destinations on the ledger.
